Excretion of glycolic acid by algae during photosynthesis.

چکیده
Although pure cultures of algae, in nutrient solution, have been used extensively in research on photosynthesis, the excretion of products into the medium has not been reported, despite their possible importance in the physiology and biochemistry of such cultures. The present investigation with the Cl4 tracer has revealed a significant, and apparently functional, secretion of glycolic acid by Chlorella into the growth medium under aerobic conditions, concurrent with COS uptake during photosynthesis. In nutrient solutions, below about pH 4.5, Chlorella loses other cell constituents, particularly sucrose.

Excretion of Some Organic Compounds by Marine Phytoplankton
The excretion of photoassimilated carbon was determined for 22 species of unicellular marine algae in culture during periods of log-phase growth and for some natural marine phytoplankton populations from Vineyard Sound and the Gulf of Maine. Carbon 14 tracers gave some information about the composition of the excreted material. Most of the algae excreted 3-6s of their photoassimilated carbon du...
متن کاملStudies on glycolic acid metabolism by frcshwatcr bacterial
Measurements of uptake and mineralization of 14C-labeled glycolic acid by freshwater heterotrophs showed that respiration (mineralization) accounts for 69% of total uptake, and that the heterotrophic potential ( V,,,,, ) for glycolate is comparable with that for other commonly used substrates. Bacteria cultured from lake water showed uptake and mineralization patterns similar to those from the ...
متن کاملGlycolic Acid Labeling During Photosynthesis with CO(2) and Tritiated Water.
Chlorella pyrenoidosa were allowed to photosynthesize for short periods of time in the presence of (14)CO(2) and HTO. Analysis of tritium and (14)C labeling of photosynthetic intermediate compounds showed that the T/(14)C ratio of glycolic acid was comparable to that of intermediate compounds of the photosynthetic carbon reduction cycle when photosynthesis was performed in nearly 100% oxygen an...
متن کاملThe Relation of Glycolic Acid Synthesis to the Primary Photosynthetic Carboxylation Reaction in Leaves.
The studies initiated by Calvin and his colleagues led to the elucidation of a well supported sequence of reactions known as the photosynthetic carbon reduction cycle (1). According to this scheme, which was largely deduced from kinetic experiments, ribulose-1,5-di-P is first carboxylated to give 2 molecules of 3-P-glyceric acid as the first stable carboxylation product (2, 3). The experiments ...
متن کاملThe role of P; recycling processes during photosynthesis in phosphate-deficient bean plants
Bean plants {Phaseolus vulgaris L. cv. Zlota Saxa) were grown on complete (control plants) and phosphatedeficient (low-P plants) culture solutions for 17 d. Phosphate deficiency markedly reduced leaf growth, but only slightly decreased the photosynthesis rate. The intensity of reactions releasing inorganic orthophosphate during photosynthesis was examined. In the leaves of low-P plants the pool...
